Creating a breakthrough with a little help from ARCADIS

In 2013, ARCADIS celebrated its 125th anniversary and part of the celebration was a worldwide sporting challenge. Specially for the ARCADIS Global Shapers (young professionals) there was a separate competition in which Young Focus received a donation. Young Focus is a Dutch NGO that supports the Smokey Mountain community in Manila (Philippines) with education and healthcare (www.youngfocus.org)

As Global Shapers, we were given the opportunity to give workshops at the Young Focus Sandigan Study Center in Tondo, Manila, on 14th December 2013. It was our goal to broaden the horizons of local students. The activities and workshops were build around the theme “How does life look like young professional”, and conducting a MBTI personality test for the students. In addition to this, we explained how to prepare for a job interview and did a role-play with the students.  And finally, we did different games, focussing on leadership and teamwork.

Overall, Young Focus was very pleased with the workshops and our willingness to help the students. In their opinion this was the missing “piece”. We, the Young Professionals, found it a very interesting experience which we could perform with ARCADIS and certainly helped us with our professional development. It was great to see the enthusiasm, eagerness and curiosity of the students who participated in the program. For us, it was very inspiring to hear the stories of the old students who changed their exsiting situation and created a better future, not just for themselves but also for their families.

It is with great confidence that I can say that, with the support from ARCADIS, it was a very successful and interesting project for us. But especially for the students of Young Focus who we hopefully have given a bigger chance on a better future!
